FHWA has not issued a mandate on the replacement of signs using the Clearview font, but all future sign installations are to use the Highway Gothic font. WebbStandard Alphabets for Highway Signs includes a series of six standard alphabet stroke widths, along with tables specifying the proper spacing of letters and numerals. These standards have been designed to provide a highly legible message, and therefore should be followed for ALL sign installations.
